Medical Director at the European Junior Athletic Championships

The European Athletics U20 Championships just finished. I was the Medical Director in charge of planning and executing the medical work for roughly 1300 athletes, their accompanying team officials, as well as some 14000 people in the audience over 4 days. It was the first time I organised something like that, and my first time having employees to manage, which has been extremely educational.

The work included

  • International recruitment and management of 26 health professionals, including doctors, nurses and physiotherapists,

  • Planning, ordering, and stocking of inventory with medicines, medical equipment and physiotherapy equipment

  • Detailed planning of the medical work on the competition and training arenas, including management of one stationary medical center and coordination of up to 7 mobile medical teams

  • Medical assessments and treatment, both as a Doctor and, for determination of ability for further competition, as the Medical Director

  • On-call duty as Doctor and Medical Director 24/7 for all athletes and team officials during the week of the competition

Despite a couple of ill-looking falls and injuries, early mornings, and very long shifts, my team executed their work awesomely throughout the week. As a reward, we got complimented by the European Athletics Association delegates.

Also, i got to meet the world’s first anti-doping dog, Molly (see pictures). She has been trained to detect WADA-prohibited substances (World Anti-Doping Agency).
